Barking Abbey’s come back fell as short as they suffered a 68-65 defeat at the hands of Team Northumbria on Sunday in Northumbria.
Alison Gorrell netted an impressive 38 points to lead the home side to victory with Karen Bonnenberger also in double figures with 11 points.
“Tough road loss,” BA Head Coach Mark Clark commented. “Disappointed in the result, not so much in the performance, the performance was a step up in terms of consistency. Obviously Diana, back to back games had to play 30 minutes and did a great job.
“Players have to stay within our rules and it was disappointing at the end of the game that we broke down what we try to do and gave them free throws and an easy look to finish the game.
“It was good to see Abigail Johnson get back in the rhythm. Now we have to play all our playoff games on the road, and the fact we came here and did a really nice job and got performance across the roster was pleasing and bodes well for the playoffs.”
BA edged the opening period before Northumbria moved in front with a 9-0 burst early in the second. However, they needed a late three from Gorrell to stay ahead at the half with the American moving to 20 points.
Northumbria pushed clear in the third to lead by eight, but the visitors kept fighting and closed to within a single point late in the game before Gorrell had the final basket to seal the game.
Abigail Johnson finished with 15 points for BA as they drop to 7-10 and will end the regular season in seventh, regardless of their result next weekend in Sheffield.
